MGT600 Assessment 1: Critical Discussion

Assessment Task

This assessment requires you to explore and critically discuss the models, concepts, and theories presented in Modules 1.1, 1.2, and 2.1 and their practical application through your experiences and observations by contributing to a group discussion and then submitting an individual critical discussion report.

Please refer to the Task Instructions for details on how to complete this task.

Context

Successful managers take a 360-degree view of their environment and are cognisant of opportunities to learn and apply ideas from other industries and disciplines. The first three sub-modules (Modules 1.1, 1.2, and 2.1) of this subject serve to orient you to the varying roles and contexts in which managers must operate and introduces foundational skills in managing people and teams. This assessment is designed for you to demonstrate not only an understanding of managerial concepts but also their practical application. In doing so, you will demonstrate critical thinking and evaluative skills as well as effective communication skills required in a virtual environment.

Instructions

1. Group Formation

ASSESSMENT 1 BRIEF

At the beginning of the trimester, you will be placed in a group of 3-4 students by the Learning Facilitator.Your group will be a forum for sharing thoughts, experiences, and research in relation to the learning activities in the Modules 1.1, 1.2, and 2.1

Note: Although the Assessment 1 is an individual assessment, it is important to build relationships with your group members. This is because you will work with the same group for Assessment 2. Introduce yourself to your group with an introductory post. It will also help to have a virtual meeting to get to know each other.

2. Complete Learning Activities in Modules 1.1, 1.2, and 2.1

You are required to individually complete the following learning activities:

Module 1.1 Learning Activity 2: Environment Analysis and Actions for Managers

Module 1.2 Learning Activity 1: Comparing Operational Management and Project Management

Module 2.1 Learning Activity 1: Communication Styles

Each of these learning activities requires you to post responses (of 250 words) into the group discussion forum in Blackboard.

You are also required to comment (using 100–200 words) on the posts made by fellow group members contributing to their discussion by sharing your practical experiences, observations, and research.

Please refer to Modules 1.1, 1.2, and 2.1 Learning Activities section for more information about completing these learning activities.

3. Critical Discussion Report

You are required to submit an individually written critical discussion report of 750 words in MS Word (.doc or .docx) format, addressing the following questions:

• How are the topics covered in Modules 1.1, 1.2, and 2.1 relevant to you?

• How did your perceptions and experiences differ from those of the other group members?

• What have you learnt and how will you apply this in the future? If you are currently working or have  previous work experience, you may discuss how you would manage situations differently based on your learnings.

4. Report Structure

Please structure your report as follows:

• Cover sheet: With student details (student name, ID number, subject code & name, assessment number and title)

• Introduction: Outline the context, purpose, and structure of your report (5–10% of word count)

Main discussion section: Answer each of the questions above (80–90% of word count)

• Conclusion: Provide a summary of the report (5–10% of word count)

Reference list

• Appendices

Please note that this is a short report with a word limit of 750. Therefore, it is important that you make use of tables, figures, and diagrams as these are not part of your word count.

5. You will be assessed against the assessment rubric below and your level of insight and application of  knowledge from Modules 1.1, 1.2, and 2.1.

You are strongly advised to read the rubric, which is an evaluation guide with criteria for grading your assignment—this will give you a clear picture of what a successful critical discussion report looks like.

MGT600 Assessment 2 Case Study Presentation and Summary Report

Assessment Task

Based on the case scenario provided, each group is required to submit a case study presentation and a summary report. In doing so, you need to utilise suitable models and frameworks to provide recommendations to achieve the case objectives. This will require the identification, evaluation, and justification of pragmatic approaches to management.

Please refer to the Instructions for details on how to complete this task.

Context

Though challenging, group assignments are designed to reflect the reality of the workplace. In this instance, it is about people coming together to contribute knowledge, experience, and skills to produce a desired outcome. Such an activity hones your skills in teamwork, communication, project management and personal organisation. This assessment encourages you to develop and apply your knowledge in relation to the key topics of Recruitment and Selection, Managing Talent, Developing People and Teams, and Managing Change.

You will continue to work in the same group that you were in for Assessment 1. The group will work together to analyse the given case study and provide recommendations to address the stated objectives.

Instructions

1. Case Scenario

• Your group is from a well-regarded consultancy firm and has been engaged by your client to provide  advice on addressing a variety of challenges.

• Please read the attached MGT600-MGMT6009_Assessment 2_Case Scenario. This includes the details of your client and their challenges and objectives. Your brief from the client is to present your findings and recommendations to achieve key strategic objectives over the next two years.

2. Assessment Preparation

• To address the case objectives, your consulting team will need to draw upon content from Modules 2, 3, and 4.

• Please note that some consideration may need to be given to other module content if deemed relevant. It is also expected that groups conduct research using the module resources and beyond.

• For each of the objectives mentioned in the case scenario, you are required to include at least one real-world example from the literature of how other organisations have successfully achieved the same or similar. For each example, you should specify the organisation, the situation it faced, action taken, and outcomes achieved.

• Your assessment submission will be in two parts: an oral presentation and a summary report.

3. Oral Presentation

• The group presentation can be considered a pitch for your recommendations.

• This oral presentation should provide a short introduction, setting of the context and research. The major part of your presentation should focus on the findings, recommendations, and justification.

3. Summary Report

• As a group, you are also required to submit a 750-word summary report along with the presentation.

• Please structure the summary report as follows:

o Cover sheet: Student name, ID number, subject code and name, assessment number and title

o Introduction: Outline the purpose and structure of your report.

o Approach (methodology): Briefly describe how you conducted your research.

o Main discussion: Key issues for consideration, findings, and supporting real-life examples

o Recommendations: Provide a summary of your recommendations.

o Conclusion

o Reference list

o Appendices

Please note that this is a short report with a word limit of 750. Therefore, it is important that you make use of tables, figures, and diagrams as these are not part of your word count.

• You may make any necessary assumptions but ensure that you explain the assumptions in your  report.

4. Peer Evaluation

Group participation constitutes 20% of the final mark for Assessment 3.

Participation will be determined as follows:

·         Each student in the team will evaluate the other members’ contributions using a participation score matrix (see Group Participation Score Matrix attached).

·         Individually, each team member will assign a “Group participation score” (from 1–5) for each member of the group using the score matrix.

·         Each student is to assess peers’ contributions according to the Peer Evaluation Grading Scheme.

·         The participation score matrix submitted by each individual student via the Assessment 2 link at the same time as the final group digital presentation submission.

·         The Facilitator will use the average “group participation score” for each member to determine the weighted ‘Teamwork’ criterion row in the final marking rubric for this assessment.

·         All peer evaluation submissions are confidential and not viewed by the other team members.

5.  You are strongly advised to read the rubric, which is an evaluation guide with criteria for grading your assignment–this will give you a clear picture of what a successful oral presentation and summary report looks like.

Referencing

It is essential that you use appropriate APA style for citing and referencing research. You are required to reference the graphics, diagrams, and models used in the presentation with the appropriate page numbers and text details. Please see more information on referencing here: Academic Skills webpage.

Submission Instructions

Graded submission – Group submission

Submit your group oral presentation and the summary report for Assessment 2 via the Assessment in the main navigation menu in MGT600 Management, People, and Teams. Only one student needs to submit these on behalf of the group. The Learning Facilitator will provide feedback via the Grade Centre in the LMS portal. Feedback can be viewed in My Grades.

MGT600 ASSESSMENT 3 - TEAM PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

Assessment Task

You are required to critically assess the performance of your team and recommend improvements based on the relevant concepts and frameworks you have learnt in this subject in a 1,500-word team evaluation report.

Please refer to the Instructions for details on how to complete this task.

Context

Managers are responsible for the delivery of products/services and results whether that be in an operational or project context. This invariably requires not only the creation and development of teams including performance improvement but also the management of a variety of team, organisational, and cultural dynamics. This assessment requires you to conduct a review of team performance and demonstrate and apply your understanding of team processes and dynamics. In doing so, you will review the performance of the group to which you were allocated for the purpose of Assessments 1 and 2. This will help you to demonstrate analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving skills to develop strategies and actions for performance improvement.

Instructions

1. Review your team’s performance in completing the first two assessments and make recommendations for improvement.

• In reviewing the team performance, considerations must be given to the following:

o How did your team come together and what phases or stages did it go through?

o What roles did team members play?

o What challenges were presented?

o How did individual, team, and contextual dynamics impact performance?

o What would you do differently to improve performance?

o How would you apply your learnings in your current or future workplace?

• Please note that you are not required to review the quality and content of the assessments you produced as a team. Instead, you are required to review the performance of the team in completing the assessment tasks.

• You are required to specifically apply and discuss concepts from Modules 4, 5, and 6 as well as any relevant processes and concepts from earlier modules.

• The evaluation needs to be supported with evidence from academic research as well as  examples from your own experiences and or observations. You will also find the module activities useful in prompting your thinking.

2. Write a team evaluation report of 1500 words using the following structure:

Cover sheet: Student details (student name, ID number, subject code & name, assessment number and title)

Executive summary

Table of contents

Introduction: Outline the purpose and structure of your report.

Background: Briefly describe your team’s purpose and relevant contextual issues.

Main discussion: Review your team’s performance covering key concepts from all modules.

Exploring these within an appropriate theoretical framework would be appropriate here.

Recommendations / action plan: Provide recommended strategies and actions to improve your team’s performance.
